How Genetics and Lifestyle Shape Hair Health

by Rutwik Shankar 19 Jun 2026

Genetics Loaded the Gun. Lifestyle Pulled the Trigger.

When Hair Loss Feels Inevitable

Hair loss is often spoken about as though it's entirely genetic.

And to be fair, genetics do play a significant role.

For founder Rutwik Shankar, that reality was impossible to ignore. With a strong family history of hair loss, he knew early on that genetics were not working in his favour. The signs began appearing sooner than he would have liked, and like many people, it was tempting to believe that nothing could be done.

But the deeper he looked, the more he realized that genetics are only part of the story.

A Lifestyle That Wasn't Helping

At the time, his lifestyle wasn't helping either.

Years of unhealthy eating habits, excess weight, poor routines, and inconsistent self-care had gradually become normal. At his heaviest, Rutwik weighed nearly 120 kilograms. While genetics may have contributed to his hair concerns, his overall lifestyle was also affecting his health and wellbeing.

That realization became a turning point.

The Power of Small Changes

Over time, he committed to making changes. Not for his hair alone, but for his overall health.

Better food choices replaced convenience. Physical activity became a routine rather than an afterthought. Small improvements, repeated consistently, eventually led to a transformation that saw him lose nearly 40 kilograms.

The experience taught him something that would later influence the philosophy behind Thique.

Genetics Matter. But Lifestyle Matters Too.

Hair health doesn't exist in isolation.

It reflects many aspects of overall wellbeing, including sleep, nutrition, stress management, movement, and consistency.

While no lifestyle change can rewrite a person's DNA, healthy habits can help support overall health and create a better environment for long-term wellness.

Perhaps the most important lesson was learning to focus on what could be controlled instead of what couldn't.

Focusing on What You Can Control

Genetics may determine where the journey begins.

Lifestyle can influence many of the factors that shape overall health along the way.

That perspective changed everything.

Instead of worrying about factors beyond his control, Rutwik chose to focus on the habits and choices he could improve every day.

The Philosophy Behind Thique

That belief remains at the heart of Thique today.

Not the promise of perfection.

Not the promise of overnight results.

But the belief that showing up for yourself consistently through better habits, better care, and informed choices can make a meaningful difference over time.

Because while genetics may write part of the story, they don't always get to write the ending.

This article reflects the personal experience and perspective of the founder. Individual experiences with hair health may vary.
